"The Cold Equations" really bugged me when I read it as a teenager. Good to see other people have thought about it and articulated the problem.

There's an exchange in DA: Inquisition where your spymaster is planning to execute a spy on suspicion of betrayal. You can argue that she should talk first, and when she says the situation is too urgent to cling to ideals you respond "Times like this are exactly when we must."

I always thought that was a nice rebuttal to the cold equations. It also leads to her being a candidate for, as far as I recall, a fairly decent fantasy pope, so make of that what you will.
