My impression is that movie producers just horribly undervalue writing. As in, why wouldn't they invest LOTS in having a really good script, every time; wouldn't it still be peanuts compared to *shooting the movie*? --am I off-base? Why is blockbuster writing so bad so often?

Script development is a one of the biggest jobs of a producer, but the blockbuster IP world has different priorities: like making hard deadlines for releases, or dealing with the schedules of large movie stars, all of which can affect how much time a script gets in dev.

There are great producers in the blockbuster IP world, too. It's not the deadline. It's the head on the shoulders.
