Forgive the story, but I think about this all the time w/r/t mediums. Jennifer Aniston use to talk about how when she and Pitt used to go out in public and no one would approach brad because he was a movie star...

Meaning he was someone they would go into a "temple" for and look "up at at like some giant god with a 40 foot tall face. But her?

She was on Friends which meant that she was just a literal friend that they would invite into their living room every week, so they would just come up and talk to her like they knew each other. The difference is stunning. And why does it feel different now?

The consumption is all scrambled and odd and more importantly, viral. Someone like Chris Evans can be mega huge but it's comprised of a language dealing with beard and sweater memes. It's our stardom is written in the currency of online language and understanding?

In essence, it's like, can you connect with an audience that makes you feel like the internet's boyfriend / girlfriend? Can you be tumblr bait? Because these are the real things that drive engagement and money now and studios are really talking like this.

This is an interesting thought! My theory is that there’s an oversaturation not just to how we embrace these stars, but to how many we have and how different the circles in which they are famous are, that the idea of a true “star” in any medium feels impossible now

the internet has made us more connected, but it’s also sped up the process by which anyone rises to the level that used to be seen as an untouchable icon, and only let them exist at that level for specific groups. i don’t know that “stars” will ever truly exist again

Well put. It also reminds me of another random story. I knew someone who was working with Malcolm McDowell on some bad italian movie in the 80's. They were talking about what made a movie star and McDowell took a huge swig of wine and looked the guy right in the eye and said...

"There's only one thing that makes someone a movie star and that's the fact they were a cat in a former life." Which sounds like a crazy story but I've been thinking about it for, like, twenty years. Brad Pitt's a lot of things. But that motherfucker was definitely a cat.
