Ive been thinking about this a lot and Ive come to the striking realization JJ Abrams might not actually understand what a story is. Its more a bot copying story algorithms.

I'm seeing a lot of responses about JJ only being good at the set-up and I felt compelled to add something to the piece on how that's not really true, either. You have to look at it as a whole.pic.twitter.com/RkhigwKyj7

I’m not sure if you mentioned it, but I’m also super disappointed with how much of Rian’s story work JJ just threw out the window like it was garbage.

Same. There were a few things I really loved from 8 that were just chucked out in 9 for no real reason

Reminds me of the problems with Moffat's Sherlock and Doctor Who runs. Always a promise that something cool is gonna happen soon but it never does. Only ever leads to the next potential reveal or vague mystery that never truly gets resolved.

Not to restart the discourse (and I've never seen Sherlock), but what are you thinking of here? Like, Who S10 is all about one central character/thematic idea. And I think in general with Moffat's Who, the resolutions are there, but they're character-based not plot/mystery based

But tbh I feel like it would not have been a problem to get a satisfying and conclusive ending if JJ had just taken the character arcs and themes of the previous two movies into account

SPOILER for Star wars RoS I felt that main parts of the movie were supposed to be in the second movie. Replace the whole casino arc with a storyline that led up to the Palpatine reveal. It felt like 2 movies jammed into one bringing along problems in both tempo and cohesion

I have no evidence that would lead me to believe that wouldn't have just messed that up, too. There's nothing under the noise.

Very appropriate. Coincidently, when I was reading your article about the “right” questions to set up a good story, I was thinking about “The Apartment”, which I finally saw last month and it’s so perfect setting up its conflicts

I mean even if it would be in general the case, with Star Wars the set up (TFA) was definitely flawed af
