Ive been thinking about this a lot and Ive come to the striking realization JJ Abrams might not actually understand what a story is. Its more a bot copying story algorithms.

I'm seeing a lot of responses about JJ only being good at the set-up and I felt compelled to add something to the piece on how that's not really true, either. You have to look at it as a whole.pic.twitter.com/RkhigwKyj7

"And it’s the kind of stuff that makes me think that Abrams really only knows how to draw direct scenic copy and paste parallels while inverting details for “surprise,” without understanding how it messes with the meaning of them." This truth applies 2 so many modern blockbusters

It also applies to how I wrap gifts.

I mainly follow you to see counter points to challenge my own thought process, but for what it's worth to you that piece was excellent in not only summarizing my own thoughts but filling in a number of blanks I hadn't yet had time to fully process. Good job!

Weirdly enough, saying J.J. Abrams is bad at catharsis is actually giving me some form of catharsis.

hilarious title & fantastic dissection aside, what I love about your writing is how kindness and levity is at the heart of everything

I’ve been thinking about this, and I wonder if it’s right to say also that Abrams is in awe with awe. With the gasp of breath, the punching the air, the tearing up. He’s in awe of film’s ability to make us feel. So he copies those moments, without understanding why/how they work

This really articulates why I left the cinema feeling hollow. And thank you for the point about the final act ships. I was sat thinking "but why would they come now? The characters have done nothing to appeal to them or give them hope." It should have been moving but felt empty.

If only there had been a previous film which had established that the legend of Luke Skywalker was beginning to inspire people around the galaxy. Boy, incorporating that in any way would have made thw arrival of the ships much more resonant.
