So I've ended up watching Home Alone for the first time since it came out, maybe? Can't remember. But I gotta say... this movie does some basic stuff really, really well. I imagine that might sound really obvious to many of you!

It's just the simple way it brings you into his interior headspace, gets at character dynamics, sets up little plot details, marks transitions, etc. It's just a crisp little story.

I'm at the violent end part and damn it all works because it's shot really, really well.

People love to say “wow, Kevin’s a little psychopath” with regards to the traps he sets; I always preferred looked at it as a kid thinking of outlandish, creative, though ultimately impractical ways to solve a problem.

Oh it's all kid logic / touches of looney-toon-dom - it all works.

Just watched this ep of Movies That Made Us on Netflix 👍🏼 Great insight from the DP.

Yeah! It's brilliant slapstick because the traps are all 100% deadly but you're never worried anyone is actually going to get hurt.

Netflix's "The Movies That Made Us" has an episode on it, and it's pretty good

I recently watched it again and loved it. I mean it's a John Hughes script directed by Chris Columbus. That's quite a pedigree!

I recall hearing somewhere that because throughout the movie it shows you the entire house, the end works extra well because by then you know most of the house's layout.

Establishing space. This is, or should be film-making 101. It’s largely ignored these days and is one of the main reasons action movies are terrible.
