Oh here's the thing. It happens every movie. The question for all the moments of breaking are: why and for what purpose? I really don't care if someone breaks rules. I care they know what they're breaking. Because you can tell when someone doesn't know instantly.https://twitter.com/PuppetMANOS/status/1204333499613773825 …

Is there a time someone has broken cinematic storytelling rules in a way that has worked for you?

It might be better to think of them as patterns rather than rules.

The word pattern makes it a reactive response to something that happens in nature. Story craft is based on purposeful construction. Set-up and payoffs. Communication and insight. A movie does not exist in nature. It is built.

Being from software, I would disagree with that definition. We use the term to define a common solution to a type of problem.

The term “design pattern”, originated in architecture to describe this phenomenon and software adopted it. It seems equally applicable to film.

Rules, on the other hand, imply a degree of certainty not available in either the arts or software (which is really more liberal arts than science).

My response to this is long and complicated, but think of it less like software design. More like the rules and regulations of physical architecture.

I think of it exactly that way, just using different words :). Film, while a construction, is probably closer to software than architecture as it is an abstraction of reality. Both are malleable in a way that buildings are not. A good beer conversation, should we ever meet.
