I know I've said it before, but INSIDE OUT is a staggering achievement and maybe the best thing Pixar has ever done. I just keep thinking about it.
I mean I grew up in a hellscape toxic house, but shes still dealing with such an understandable psychological dilemma?

Well, Riley is clinging to her childhood. Resisting change. Meanwhile, at that age, I couldn't grow up fast enough so I could move as far away as possible. I had a happy family life, but had few friends, was severely bullied, and was desperate to move far away and do new things.

ALSO, I have issues with the idea that Joy was judging the other emotions by how useful they were. It was in character for her, yes, but the movie, I think, endorsed that view to its own detriment.
