Not so gentle reminder: there isn’t a single justification for pirating someone’s art.

I also say this as someone whose book was more stolen than it was bought and it kills me.

Genuine question, is there a material difference on your end between someone buying a used copy of your book from a third party, someone checking out a physical or digital copy from their library, and someone pirating it?

Yeah. I've actually stopped reading scanlated manga and stick to the official releases nowadays, but when something will never ever be available in English officially, there are no other ways of getting it anyways.

It's like the copyright holders complain about losing money in places they don't even make money in. The sensibility is sorely lacking.

Yeah I mean I want to agree, but the whole vibe seems harsh considering the many many MANY factors in play here, I love that lot of artists are cutting middle man and just doing paypal and pdf files now a days.

Here in Poland it's almost impossible for me to get certain English things without paying an international price that just isn't feasible on Polish income. We don't have access to libraries with English books, some movies/shows never show up in English in theaters/streaming.

We still buy some English books every so often, but they aren't cheap. My wife devours books like they're candy. If we had a library with access to these books she'd be there once a week. And all the cool ebook libraries we know of in the States are region locked online.

I guess "just wait" seemed more reasonable before social media too, but now we get internet situations like say the US blatantly memifying Baby Yoda before the rest of us are officially supposed to know he exists :(
