Well what risk and surprises are in marvel films? (Serious question)

The surprises come in the characterizations outside the main plots. Things like Hulk trying coming to grips with his problems, Iron Man dealing with PTSD from being a normal human, or Thor having a breakdown at the loss he's suffered.

Redefining cinema in a way that it excludes films like these, basically mean that you're going to have to cut out films like Indiana Jones, or Star Wars, or Lord of the Rings. You know how they're going to end from the get-go, it's largely the journey getting there.

And for many people, the trip is what they're there for. Sure, you're not worried that the hero is going to die. But for the most part, Marvel doesn't cheat on the narrative arcs they pursue. It's largely why they've had success where other "movie universes" have failed.

Are they formulaic? Sure. You know the good guys will win (eventually) and you know there will be plenty of spectacle. Sure, there's not a of nuance, but there are common themes in these movies -- things like dealing with loss, or betrayal, abandonment - or a search for purpose.

They're universal and they're easy to understand. Being simple doesn't make them bad stories, or any less cinematic than "riskier" films.
