I'll say this, if you're gonna dive into that specialized knowledge in a story, be sure you actually know something about it - ESPECIALLY if you're going to make fun of it.

I believe it's just a turn of phrase in most cases. I know I'll say "the secret to great coffee is grinding the beans yourself", without believing I have any special knowledge.

All of these things are just missed opportunities for jokes IMHO - "the secret to this great dish is just to cook it good."
