I really have a hard time talking about this stuff. Mostly because I feel like one 1) most people don't know what I'm talking about and 2) don't care. Complaining and being angry about it makes me feel petty and small, especially with so many important things going on.

But the conversations we have around design and the modern world are critical. And consumers have been taught for years to defer to laborious, even dangerous design- I talk about all this in part one of this essayhttps://www.polygon.com/2019/4/22/18298277/red-dead-redemption-2-review-rdr2-story-design-criticism …

And now I see the seams of something happening that scares the fucking bejeezus out of me when it comes to phone and UI design and that's the use of a false metric - that of "engagement time."

There's a million things that count for engagement time, but a lot of them don't have to do with enjoyment of use, but quantity of use - which means "quick ease of use" is not on their menu. In terms of being a user, this metric terrifies me.

And only those who can temporarily out-tech it go another day, while the rest of the world shrugs and buys in. I don't know. It all makes me feel cynical. I care a lot about this. I'm not sure how many others do.

But I'll say this as a last note. Think about how we all fight for time. Hours, minutes, and seconds of a day, for them to be healthy, peaceful, and good for our mental health. Now think about how much of our day is spent using said tech. ... Most of it. The minutes matter.

Yeah, have had for like a month now, but I think it changed back last week (or I've gotten used to it which, ew, I'd hate myself)
