Note: this was completely a product of the Alexa coming into the space and people convincing themselves to spend the extra money on it while having no idea what they were doing. To be fair, I did this, too.

I remember spending forever trying to color the dang thing without realizing it would take YEARS to fine tune the overall process so people could get what they really wanted out of it. Weirdly seems like ancient history now, but it was all growing pains.

How to put it... the alexa captured information in "log c" - which effectively put information and detail capture in normal ranges so that the information would be safe from blown out extremes and manipulate-able later.

the effect of this, was a highly de-saturated / non blown out image that was captured, a washed-out gray more or less BUT this is what gave you an image with all the necessary detail and nothing got too dark or too light that you couldn't save the detail.

BUT - because the process of taking that image and properly coloring it was time consuming and fickle (especially at first) a bunch of artists just convinced themselves to stick with the milky gray washed out image, often convincing themselves they liked it better.

Maybe they earnestly liked it better, but I can't really imagine. There's a reason you dont see it so much anymore. We / the units got better.

I saw this happen on several shorts I worked on - after spending so much time looking at footage with no LUT to speak of, people "got used" to Log-C and felt daunted at the prospect of trying to do an actual color grade.
