I remember spending forever trying to color the dang thing without realizing it would take YEARS to fine tune the overall process so people could get what they really wanted out of it. Weirdly seems like ancient history now, but it was all growing pains.

There were plenty of colorists (& DPs) who knew & had a process. The common issue was not to budget for color in post, which is *still* a problem. Now it's easily colored-over with an internet LUT. Less obviously bad than log-c, but doesn't realize full potential of the image.

Not the problem. The issue is as prior to that. I was in far too many sessions where client wanted flatter looks, @ $800 an hour.
