So to the internet I ran, seeking answers. And ultimately decided to wipe my saves and start totally fresh, with a new mindset. Namely: engage as much as possible in every game mechanic offered. Make all the potions. Prep for every fight. No fast travel, with minimal hud.

No more lazer focus on the "next objective", but allow myself to be distracted by every question mark, conversation, gwent game, and monster nest.

And suddenly.....I found myself wiping away tears after an incredible finale of one of the best games I had ever played.

Sometimes I think it is important to remember that not every game has to innovate, or be new and "fresh". Sometimes it is enough to simply engage with the way the game demands to be played, because then it can take us on a journey.

But also remember, on the flip-side, not every game is for every gamer. There are many games that look fun or amazing, but I simply cannot play, or do not engage me. I have tried several metroidvania type games for example, and they are simply not for me.

They are just not engaging to me personally. That does not make them bad games. Just not MY games.

This article by @jickle (https://medium.com/super-jump/rdr2s-slow-pace-isn-t-about-realism-7a43ef8ec25 …) is simply fantastic. It really articulates for me the purpose of the pace for RDR2, and why I embraced the "clunkiness", and initial crazy complications of the controls. RDR2 demands an intentional thoughtfulness of its players.

You have to fully engage the many systems. Feed and groom yourself and your horse. Take your time traveling across the world. Chose your interactions with every single person you meet. Manage your satchel. Upgrade your gear by exploring the world and hunting its many beasts.

Even the simple, slow pace of Arthur's default walking speed was an enormous, unmissable indicator of the attitude I was meant to adopt as I approached the game.

Again, @FilmCritHULK , I do not mean this as some attack or grand response. Just....my thoughts. I think you picked the game apart in a great many unfair ways, and it really bothered me, so I merely am trying to articulate why, as well as my thoughts on the common complaints.

This is all kind and well-reasoned, I will say this. Whereas prep and pacing and thoughtfulness behooved me in W3 in ways that gave me advantage, in RDR2 it felt like needless and excessive maintenance, which, when combined with repetitive dramatic storytelling, irked deeply.

I suppose in some way it comes down to personal preference. For example, I found the story to be quite good despite its flaws. In fact I enjoyed it immensely. Though perhaps that is a preinstalled bias from growing up on old cowboy movies and Louis L'Amour novels.

Also the minutiae and detail in the game just...was endlessly interesting to me. This was like playing cowboy as a kid. Just, even better. I think this is just a really big example of every game not being for every gamer. And that was really my biggest contest with your article.
