So what's the point of all this? Next time you unleash a "hot food take," think for a moment if you understand the basics of the flavor involved and it's not because you didn't develop your palate beyond a five-year-old. Spritz the damn lime. Soon you'll see it's delicious.

My food hot take is that it's probably best if people just keep their own nose on their own plate.

But that's not how we branch out and grow.

To a point, sure! But the example of somebody admonishing folks who enjoy a flavour combination? That's a mind your own plate situation. I guess it can be turned into a teachable moment, but I just think we shouldn't scold people for liking the way things taste.

There's a real importance to the nuance here. The guy didn't say "i never squirt the lime on tacos because i like what I like and it's too much acid for me." He said that the limes shouldn't be included and that they're doing food wrong. This branches out...

Because it's so helplessly reflexive, I get that. I really do and hopefully that was clear in the thread. But I think "coming at food with an open mind" is the flip side to doing all of this. Instead, it's about asking "why are limes always included?" and

"what is it about how i eat that prevents me from enjoying it." We all have druthers, of course. But not looking at thoughtful introspection of food leads to the same kind of myopia that shows up in culture in general (see: ugly delicious). It's all related.

Right! I guess I came off like I was defending him, when I was was not. Like you said, he was saying people were doing food wrong... and my "keep your nose on your own plate" is reserved for THAT kind of nonsense. I can't fathom getting angry at the way other people eat.

Food should be a joyous thing. So when people get all "you're doing it wrooooong", I want to smack them with a rolled up newspaper. Because trying to stop people from taking joy in their food is utterly, painfully ridiculous.

(I get especially upset when someone wants to shame others for doing it wrong when I personally go through long periods of not enjoying my food because everything that isn't "plain rice and/or toast" is sending me to the bathroom constantly.)

A few things 1. See, my brain takes everything to the "why" place - if someone says i'm doing something wrong, that's my immediate question, and either i can learn if I'm doing something wrong, or the person can (hopefully) learn if the way they taught was wrong (science rules) -

          2. You comment gets into the interesting issues of digestion, and how that plays into regionalism / specific proclivities as well - but I think it's a separate-but-interlocking conversation if that makes sense?
