Anyone out there have an estimate on how much money is being put into the launch of Disney Plus? Make no mistake, they are launching something designed to succeed. But thanks to run amok capitalism, not delivering on insane subscription estimates could be a huge problem...

If it was just a back catalogue it could run fairly cheaply, but they are throwing a bunch of new shows on their with big names, they’re starting where netflix took decades to get.

That’s what I’m thinking too, Netflix had a long ramp and dedicated user base, Disney is counting poaching Hulu’s base, it’s a calculated risk but it’s still a big risk. And no matter how well they did with the MCU, that’s no guarantee their Marvel shows will be hits.

fully agreed! i'm just saying that they were going to make those shows and market them either way, whether they launched their own service or not. they'd have ended up on netflix or amazon or whatever.

It's a significant amount of money, but is it a significant amount of money from a Disney perspective, given how massive they are.

George Lucas spent years trying to figure out how to do a Star Wars tv show without losing the visual quality on a TV budget and failed. Disney just chucked 10 million an episode at them to solve the problem.

For example: I believe it was reported that Disney spent close to $150 Million on The Mandalorian, which is alot for a series.
