Kind of a long shot, but you can give it a try (didn't find anything on the web tbh). In the phone app there is a setting in the Notifications menu where you can turn on/off a counter that shows your unread messages. Since there is no Web notifications, maybe this can solve it

I also found this article but - well, for me at least - this "Web notifications" site literally doesn't exist, it redirects me to "Push notifications". Maybe turning THAT off solves it in browser?
