The Last Black Man in San Francisco is incredible. Note perfect story + theming, and it's first time in ages I've been taken with a new style from a director (the way it plays with verticality and z-axis and spacing). Best film I've seen this year.

I think the most convincing characters experience conflict as a consequence of their nature/environment, not as an expression of it. Believe me, I get family-mythology-as-vessel-of-identity-preservation, but the primary conflicts felt like willful acts of antagonism (re selfprez)
