And what seems to be lost in the conversation of Jimmy Fails' story is his performance, which is extraordinary. He carries so much with so much quiet, but you know exactly what he's thinking and feeling at every second. In love with it.

I still keep thinking about it, chiefly how it really seems to cut through a lot of the B.S. and problems of respectability politics and frame it in more interesting conversations of empathy, toxic masculinity, and generational trauma. Just beautiful.

I was shocked that it was the director’s first feature film.

100% with you re: the new style. I thought the performances were worse than you did, and the story's most dramatic moments felt self-inflicted to me, but this is an important film and filmmaker.
-
I'm genuinely confused by what you mean in your middle statements re: worse / self-inflicted.

I was a bit confused on the messaging. The film seemed to eventually treat gentrification as a natural occurrence. The home passed from the initial Asian owners, to Fails grandpa to the current owners and that's treated as something sad but morally neutral and inevitable
-
It is DEFINITELY not saying it's morally neutral. The japanese owners lost it to internment for pete's sake. What it's ultimately trying to do is reckon with the humanity and loss within inevitable tides of change beyond one's means.

Johnathan Majors is so, so good in that movie. It also has one of the most shattering moments I’ve ever seen (the hug).
