There's a lot of filmmakers / storytellers out there with good taste. They like the same stuff we do. They're often good at recreating the feeling of those good things with textures, moods and iconography. This is not to be belittled. But what they often lack is story sense.

thank you saying this so clearly. It isn't about anything coherent, it's allergic to any actual characterization... like it's (ironically) stuck in some voided reality, where no one acts like they've been to hell and back twice already. Doesn't even DO anything with the meta-refs

Any filmmaker out there that is the opposite? Amazing story sense, lack of design sense?

I'm a creator and the kinda games I make are endless so I've never finished something. Any recommendations on learning to close things?

Halt was really strong on dramatic structure. Question: do you think about story theory explicitly at all when you write? I’ve kind of gotten into reading about that lately—finding it fascinating but wondering if working screenwriters roll their eyes at it.

It 100% felt like a repeat of previous seasons in so many places.
