There's a lot of filmmakers / storytellers out there with good taste. They like the same stuff we do. They're often good at recreating the feeling of those good things with textures, moods and iconography. This is not to be belittled. But what they often lack is story sense.

Speaking of "re-negging on growth", does it bother you that people constantly criticize Game of Thrones for "ruining" Jaime's character - citing the fact that he went back to Cersei? It reminds me of your piece on Nightcrawler, and our obsession with character arcs.

I'll put it this way, it's not that Jamie *couldn't have* done that, it's just that there was no real sudden psychological impetus for why he's going back. That's the real problem. It felt like unmotivated fatalism instead of motivated fatalism.
