Like you, I was a first timer watching when it released on Netflix. Just finished the series itself and End of Evangelion a few hours ago. I am still beside myself just REELING from the conclusion to this story. Can’t sleep.

You might also consider Devilman Crybaby, a 2018 Netflix anime based on a 1972 manga that had some influence on Eva. (Funnily enough, while writing/drawing Devilman, Go Nagai also made Mazinger Z -- the first piloted-giant-robot story. The man's shadow is long.)
