Exactly so. And like when I finally figured out that the NERV logo is a fig leaf I was just: Mind = Blown

Haha, that's literally in my notes :)

Currently writing an essay. But authors duck tricky questions all the time, ESPECIALLY about religion. But also because the entire point a lot of times is to let people do their interpretation. The author otherwise gets in the way.

“I used it just because” is faster to get out in an interview than “here’s a multi layered essay for you.” Like Anno is a smart guy. He been knew as they say

The quote is not even from Anno. The guy who said the christian themes are meaningless is Kazuya Tsurumaki, who directed the first half of End of Evangelion. Anno just said something about the name "Evangelion", he never said anything about the christian symbolism.pic.twitter.com/QdnTrzkOLA

And even that quote doesn't mean what people think it means. He's just saying that they are not trying to convince anyone of Christianity. You can read the Bible as a piece of fiction and still recognize the literary worth of it.

That's been a popular meme for years that I've wanted to see some pushback on. Even if nothing else, the crucifixes highlight the theme of choice between sacrificing yourself to take something bad out of the world vs living and understanding it. That's right there on the surface.

To be fair a LOT of anime has direct elements of western mythology and it’s usually not that deep...Evangelion is the exception to all anime rules tho

The “Genesis” in the title is a translation artifact, the Japanese subtitle translates to something like “Gospel of the new century”. Maybe worth mentioning too that Lilith was not born of Adam in Evangelion.
-
Yep, they were equal. And Adam didn't like that, so they made Eva out of his dick bone.
