These are the same cop. He’s known as the dancing cop in Columbus, Ohio. When y’all wanna be all like, “all cops aren’t bad” I want you to see how they seduce you into that phony belief. Keep ya kids away from these monsters. pic.twitter.com/6zPgvArJlW

I was in Boston when the Patriots won their first Superbowl (the 2001 season against greatest show on turf). I watched it with friends from home and we were elated, so we, like so many, went into the streets to celebrate.

The intent was not to "riot." I mean that. We just wanted to go into Kenmore Square and be with people cheering in the streets. It was a far more innocent event than the days to come (where non-fans just used championships as an excuse to riot).

Anyway, after a little celebrating, the police show up. But they really are just there to monitor the situation. Heck, they're often just there standing in pairs, scattered on the street corners. There's even two funny younger cops that were near us.

They both can't help but smile through the whole thing. They're huge Pats fans. They're laughing. They're giving high fives. They're friendly. They turn down a few pictures, but shrug when people take them anyway.

Things get sillier. My friend, let's call him Anusha, is getting a bit rowdy and standing on mailboxes and yelling shit about the yankees. But there's no fires or destruction. Nothing felt dangerous. Hell, there was even a hippy guy playing a drum.

Time presses on. Things are still fun. I'm with a bunch of happy people dancing by the drum circle and then out of nowhere, I feel this sharp pain instantly in the small of my back and I'm flying like a rag doll.

I realize I'm getting elbow checked by someone huge, running full-speed and blind-siding me. I flew like six feet. People screamed. I'm stumbling on the ground in pain and I turn around because what the fuck?

It's the same cop from before (they got the call to disperse the crowd). But suddenly he's grabbing the guy's drum and swinging it at people, screaming, swearing, puffing up his chest as everyone runs. I'm watching dumb founded and we make eye contact... And he smiles.

It's this huge, canary-eating, devilish grin. He knew this was completely fucking unnecessary. But now was his turn to have fun. With a little chuckle, he goes and starts chasing off everyone else and checking everyone he sees.

Bewildered and in pain, I go find Anusha, but I'm coming into a situation where the OTHER cop that was near us is literally screaming in Anusha's face and he's just frozen, shaking, paralyzed. What's going on?

"I been watching you all night and get the fuck out of here and get the fuck out of this country!" Then he says something about 9/11. I forget what it was, but this was a few months after and boy howdy were people still angry (read: racist).

Never mind that Anusha is Hindu, all the cop sees is a brown guy with a beard. And Anusha was not the kind of person who takes even the slightest bit of racism lightly. Me and another friend basically had to drag him home so he didnt GO FIGHT A COP.

The point of this story is not to be shocked by the cops' behavior. Hell, this is as innocent as it comes with police aggression. But what it does highlight perfectly is "the flip" where a cop suddenly decides NOW he's going to exercise his power, often just cuz.

And it is just cuz. I saw other older cops going around being like "all right show's over folks" and people calmly leaving. But these two "fun cops" from earlier went agro, for literally no other reason than the want to do violence and leverage power (also: racism).

This is the terrifying lynchpin of any police interaction. Because the rhyme or reason for why The Flip gets switched are as obvious as they are haunting. Whether it's the intersections of racism, wanting to feel authority, or just because "now they are allowed."

Things would get worse after that. Both in terms of the few idiots who would get overzealous and the officers being way way too excited to exercise a little "crowd control" This of course spiraled and resulted in the death of fan.

You can read the details here. He just wanted to shoot someone and "didn't realize" rubber bullets could easily kill someone. Of course, the police stepped back their aggression after and things magically "got better." http://archive.boston.com/news/local/articles/2005/09/21/in_snelgrove_files_officers_recount_night_of_chaos/ …

There's the psychological heart of all this that is impossible to ignore. I know my high school class. I know every kid who became a cop. For every truly decent person who went in with good intentions, there were three of the meanest, most vindictive, sadistic assholes I knew.

And there are so many smarter writers out there covering the institutional reality of how the profession is broken. And how it HAS been broken for so fucking. To the point that it's almost defined by it's brokenness. We all know this. But so many white people rarely face it.

So from the outside, we just have to understand that reality because we are forced into a relationship with that brokenness. Police officers ask me if I don't trust them because they're a cop and I say I don't trust the profession.

Because it's as impossible, one-sided civic relationship as there is. And until we wrestle with the dark heart of that reality, we can't buy the viral fluffy P.R. that seems like "a ray of hope." Ultimately, it's just anecdotal charm, a literal way of dancing around the subject.

And the guy who gives you a high five will later hurt you just because it's fun. And because he's allowed to. And for a million other reasons. And if you're not white, it's probably going to be much much much much worse. [end]
