You don't remember how Joaquin Phoenix farted in The Master and turned it into a comedy?

Also the Akira Manga has some hilarious moments because it’s about teenage boys coming of age against the backdrop of the apocalypse

I wish more people understood this, especially creatives on 'realistic'/'gritty' projects. It's a pretty basic lesson that every English class teaches before the climax of any Shakespearean tragedy.

I see what you're going for, but my thought was more I remember zero jokes in the original film. The manga of course may be different, as my mentions can now attest.

There are more than zero jokes... Kaneda is established as a weirdly goofy character before it starts getting real seriouspic.twitter.com/zCKRlYvd03

Akira has some genuine laughs in it. The idea of a socially-abandoned urchin wielding god powers to get petty revenge on his best friend is, as a concept, kinda funny. That doesn't negate the horror of it.

I do wonder...for example - take the destruction of Asgard. Undercut immediately by a joke. But maybe that's a whole separate Marvel Style conversation. I ♡ Taika, but one has to admit his previous work has a very clear tonal through-line that doesn't seem to mesh w Akira.

Then again, I'm excited for a Todd Phillips Joker movie so.....
