This is going around a lot today. Yes. It is a perfect answer. It's also an insanely flippant question to ask someone who lost their partner and daughter. I can't believe Colbert really did that. He had to be unaware? And at the same time, how are unaware with that in a guest? https://twitter.com/misslaneym/status/1127281519951863809 …

That's why Craig Ferguson was the best man. He didn't give a shit about the pre-interview and talked about whatever the hell he wanted. It was a high wire act but, when it worked.... So good

What are some other meaningful, backdoor, possibly accidental moments in talk show history? I'm all eyes.

Don't know about talk shows, but a radio interview of the female rapper Meg the Stallion is going viral due to the host asking about her mother not being her manager anymore... Her mother recently passed in March

My first college journalism professor brought up watching Fallon interview an author without reading the book first and told us never to do that.

Can you clarify what are some of the ongoing issues with how late night does their interview prep?

Also seeing the whole interview gives more context as to why he asked the question and you can see after he asked it he realized his mistake

On talks shows celebs usually know the questions they’re going to be asked and rehearse the answers. There’s a good chance this was setup.

I think it’s part of why Sean Evans started getting such insane guests so quickly. Their prep game is incredible.

Colbert was good when doing his schtick for the daily show but as a late night host he comes across as uncaring and bland. His interviewing is pretty awful - he just responds to everything his guests say with "oh really?" and never asks real followup questions
