Pleeeeeease do not harp on the GOT cinematographer (who also shot battle of bastards / hardholme), trust me they do the work to be sure it's lit correctly and then a million things can happen afterwards and in post / streaming that can cause dark / muddy-ing / etc.

Why is iPad so bad? Many people watch it larger in their field of view on iPads than on TVs (see attached). Plus no motion smoothing, no "Vibrant," no noise reduction, no automated dynamic contrast adjustment (and even has better contrast ratio than some consumer TVs).pic.twitter.com/dVqQ9Firg6

I've ALWAYS wondered about this. Now I know.

Are there really people who geek out about tv picture quality this much? I watch tv on my laptop all the time. It’s fine.

I’m watching a hockey game right now with my laptop plugged into a tv. It looks fine. I watched the last game of thrones the same way. It was a little dark, but lots of GOT episodes are. I could watch this in better quality, but I never bought a tv. People give me old ones free.
