This is interesting because it actually explains what I think can (sometimes) be Fincher's fatal flaw where he ends up right between the two extremes and I don't feel like he's letting me "decide" anything - I just feel like I'm getting completely muddled communication. https://twitter.com/RealEOC/status/1120792722615488512 …

My partner and I were fortunate to catch a recent screening of Se7en, which I hadn't seen in at least 10 years. The lingering thought I had at the end was that I think Fincher was going for subversive, but that it would have been more subversive if Mills hadn't shot John Doe.

Perhaps now it’s less subversive but when it came out we didn’t see our protagonists give in to their impulses and fall from grace like Mills did.

*gestures to the entire landscape of seventies and eighties cinema, where that probably happens more often than even now*

That may be the case for the 70s/80s and I’ll defer to your expertise there as you know cinema better than I, but in 1995 I didn’t feel that to be the case.

I swear this isnt a knock, but I honestly think many people often mistake “their first movie like that” for it being a common experience for all. When we are younger, our first daring narrative forays feel revolutionary, even if they are part of a longer tradition.

I agree that this style of film wasn’t pioneered in the 90s and that filmmaking goes through cycles. What I am saying is that Se7en subverted our expectations of the films of the mid 90s which is different than our expectations of films now.
