That may be the case for the 70s/80s and I’ll defer to your expertise there as you know cinema better than I, but in 1995 I didn’t feel that to be the case.

I swear this isnt a knock, but I honestly think many people often mistake “their first movie like that” for it being a common experience for all. When we are younger, our first daring narrative forays feel revolutionary, even if they are part of a longer tradition.
