I always thought that's Alex's MO in the film: ironically "performing" what he thinks everyone else is unconsciously engaged in: and well, he's right. Everyone except some of the victim's and the priest is a sex lunatic and/or totalitarian nut.

That's likely what the copycats saw in the film: look, someone who "gets" how fucked up it all is - so let's just act it all out like him! It doesn't matter if Kubrick assumed we know it's morally wrong to beat up an innocent man, we sympathize with Alex and his viewpoint...
