in peanuts lucy would always tell charlie brown she wouldn't move the football this time and every time charlie brown would fall for it, go to kick, and she'd move it... MCU has done this dance. There are no risks, just continued teasing and calculation.

Jumping in to ask isn't part of this bc that's how comic books are? You can't have meaningful character change bc the series would end & they're designed to continue.

This is part of their fundamental misunderstanding: comics run ad infinitum. The space of storytelling in movies is much more condensed and you can fill it with much more meaningful change. Cause in the end, all these movies haven't even covered 2 seasons of TV time.

The movies DO have meaningful character change, and a conclusion. How has the new movie not demonstrated that to you?? Tony Stark went from being selfish to heroic to sacrificial to worried to guilty to desperate to broken. That is real, specific character change.

And it literally happened at the end of the first avengers and they been wheel spinning since. Stop this.

Avengers ended with him being willing to sacrifice himself. Then in Iron Man 3 he had PTSD over that. In Age of Ultron, he was haunted by the looming threat and tried to create a robot army that could protect the world. Then the aftermath of that caused guilt.

Guilt led him to betray the other Avengers in Civil War, becoming the villain. That rift led to the events in Infinity War, leading to more guilt and loss. Real character changes with real consequences.

This conversation is simply not going to work because you are taking the conflicts and characterizations at surface level only and not looking at the important non-changes and dramatic subtext. Civil War literally ends with "here's my phone this wasn't serious and I'm there for u

And it's indicative of the faux nature of all these conflicts that don't end up REALLY mattering on any bigger level. I've written about this extensively. But again, I really don't want to keep going down this rabbit hole. Be well.

Yes, I’ve read your writings about it. Extensively. If you still think that half the universe dying counts as “these conflicts really don’t matter on any bigger level”, I don’t see how you can argue that any events matter in any movie.

Am I remembering correctly that you said Age of Ultron was intended to end very differently for Tony and then they had to change it to postpone the consequences?
