I’ve not played RDR2, but @FilmCritHULK’s discussion of the mini games and general controls as attempts at immersion that were ultimately immersion breaking had me flashing back to everything David Cage has ever made.

I like that comparison, but I think it actually outlines my biggest problem with this take. Heavy Rain's mundane tasks aren't meant for "immersion", and neither are RDR2's. The opposite! They're there to ground the character and make you empathize with them as separate from you.

Heavy Rain sucks shit, but RDR2 isn't immersion of self into world/character, its immersion of character into world. RDR2 is procedural RP prompter I mash X to brew coffee b/c I'm worried Arthur's feet hurt and I want him to feel better. Taking the time to brew it IS the point.

RDR2 is a framework to roleplay. It's like kids playing House: it's a framework to facilitate the "play" of pretending to bake a pie. Baking isn't a slog, because eating fake pie isn't the goal. The minigames, realism, & the slog are all just ways of baking a proverbial pie.

This analogy doesn't make much sense I'm afraid. Kids playing "house" are hugely abstracted from the realities of all the things they pretend to do. Increasing the realism of play certainly doesn't achieve anything there.

Naw, kids LOVE learning new ways to better emulate mommy and daddy. I would relish in every new firefighter fact I learned that I could integrate into the next time I played house. "REAL firefighters wear big overalls, Bryce! And this is how they put em on! Look!"

You realizing you are essentially arguing that we should all be processing art the way a four year old experiences the world around them and not the way an adult does with the ability to make leaps in basic cognition, correct? Because that's our disconnect here.

Not that we all should be, but that we can, and people do, and that that's not bad. Even if it's not Dark Souls. Don't gatekeep.

The 4-year-old comparison is just an illustration, man. I'm just describing a type of play, which is one the article didn't account for, but it explains a few of the design decisions & "why"s. Just think of the "Sim" genre (flight sims, Mil-Sims, etc) It's fine to like that.
