It's finally here! I basically wrote a little mini-book about Red Dead Redemption II, but of course it's about so much more: design, identity, anti-gaming, and the crux of criticism. Best yet I got publish it at @polygon which is only my favorite dang sitehttps://www.polygon.com/2019/4/22/18298277/red-dead-redemption-2-review-rdr2-story-design-criticism …

this is a great piece that I, so far, can’t relate to at all. you’re clearly not wrong about anything, but I dunno, I memorised the controls and inputs in like, less than a day? so it’s hard for me to agree that they’re so terrible, even though objectively I get it

and your complaints about the realism are all about things that personally made me feel so much more immersed in the world. it’s a series of excellent arguments, for sure. just not ones that I personally agree with.

I'll admit I actually have had a bit of an arc in terms of how I experience realism in games. I think it speaks to their power that it was easy for me to disappear into them - but as I got to relate to them more and more in terms of meaning and construction and time, that changed

that is extremely fair. one part in which I absolutely have no qualms is in the comparisons to Breath of the Wild. damn, that game is just perfect. also I love these illustrations so much
