Re: the Cuphead discussion, it makes infinite more sense to link to a well-thought article then simply reference the lack. The ultimate point is that the creators' attitude of "It’s just visuals and that’s about it" can't be the way we engage arthttps://unwinnable.com/2017/11/10/cuphead-and-the-racist-spectre-of-fleischer-animation/ …

There's a very strong desire to have anything with reflects the past to be subversive in one specific way which is politically useful. If something doesn't even try to do that, then it's a stolen opportunity. Narrowing how people "engage with art" to just that shows this anxiety.

at some point this is less criticism and more "this work should have been something else" which isn't a very useful statement

Its really not saying that tho. Its saying if you are going to engage a subject, you have to show thoughtfulness with that subject and understand what it communicates, the how is up to the artist.

cuphead isn't engaging with a subject so much as it is engaging with an aesthetic

the subject of the political and racial attitudes in cartooning at the time seem beyond the scope of a platform game

Nothing is beyond the scope of a platform game or any piece of art. There's amazing platformers loaded with meaning and also take responsibility for those meanings. This is the core nature of art.

there is also amazing art which is great as pure exercises in style. like cuphead, for instance

The entire point of semiotics is there's no way you can simply opt out of meaning just because you want to have an exercise. The meaning is created whether you want it or not. And when you aren't aware of that as an artist is when you step into hot water.
