Nothing is beyond the scope of a platform game or any piece of art. There's amazing platformers loaded with meaning and also take responsibility for those meanings. This is the core nature of art.

like for an example of a work which doesn't take responsibility for aesthetics, you can look at far cry 4/5 appropriating political issues without actually doing anything with them! But I can't really accuse cuphead of doing this in good faith
