Re: the Cuphead discussion, it makes infinite more sense to link to a well-thought article then simply reference the lack. The ultimate point is that the creators' attitude of "It’s just visuals and that’s about it" can't be the way we engage arthttps://unwinnable.com/2017/11/10/cuphead-and-the-racist-spectre-of-fleischer-animation/ …

And conflating their work with real world racism is? Why are so many critics more than happy to continually ignore the intent of the artist?

Intent is not the same thing as effect. That's semiotics 101. Just because the artists didn't mean to use racist imagery doesn't take away from the fact that they did. At that point, it's just about owning and understanding and growing and not shutting the discussion down.

I tried to address it when I was restoring the Fleischers’ Superman cartoons. They get worse when they do anti-war propaganda, but even before that, there are undertones.https://mmsuperman.tumblr.com/post/161090865235/the-arctic-giant …

Surely if cuphead wanted to use an old animation style from the Betty Boop era they clearly must inject ham-handed "racism bad" (which of course it is) messages as penance for using an art style that differs from anime or pixelart. Really, what on earth were they even thinking?

Animation styles aren't inherently racist. This makes about as much sense as saying "Disney and Ford as companies are racist because their founders were racist and Volkwagen is a Nazi company because Hitler had a major hand in their creation" You're pushing ridiculous extremes.

I see what the article and its author are getting at and I understand that, yes, we shouldn't ignore the racism prevalent in cartoons of the era. We should acknowledge it and discuss it. However, I also understand Cuphead just not wanting to deal with that shit.

But the whole point is there's no way *not* to deal with it in art. It's an inherent responsibility and when you're aware of it you can at least be better at avoiding the most troublesome images, etc.

There's a very strong desire to have anything with reflects the past to be subversive in one specific way which is politically useful. If something doesn't even try to do that, then it's a stolen opportunity. Narrowing how people "engage with art" to just that shows this anxiety.

"The racism isn't there, but it COULD have been there." is the most self victimizing take the writer could have taken.
