I mostly love The Last Jedi but I really hate how it turns that emotional moment from the end of Force Awakens with Rey reaching out with the lightsaber into a joke. I see how Luke is almost echoing ESB Yoda-style humor by tossing the saber but I really dislike it.

I really think it was the honest thing to do with that moment

I love the idea of him throwing the saber. Resisting the call is so Campbell. I just don’t like how it feels like it’s played for humor. But maybe that’s more of my problem with how Hamill plays the moment? Not sure.

It might go against expectations of what rey wanted (and the audience), but as the introduction to the snarky, hilarious, and haunted version of Luke that he has become? It feels note perfect.

I don't know how else they could've gotten across the same idea. Even putting anger or drama on it wouldnt have been as big of defiance of any plausible expectation - the only foundation suitable for rebuilding a new sense of "this is going somewhere else."

I personally would have liked to see him angerly throw it into the ocean. But maybe that also would have seemed weird. Idunno honestly. I like the choice that he doesn’t want it. I feel like I just don’t like the humorous take. But again that’s probably just my taste.
