My theory: I think it’s because it is so serialized, and it’s been out for so long, people who are in deep actually forget that there are people who don’t know these characters, and want to enjoy the wild roller coaster instead of being aware of every twist and loop.
Is it also fair to say I've noticed this manner of discussion is slightly more common with male anime fans? I mean I know generalizing but when you're getting a look at large scale responses, it's easier to see the trends.
People are overeager and this thread is somewhat of a novelty as a notable internet person is very publicly getting into a show in a fandom that's been discussing the show as a whole for 10 years for the first time, so I imagine it's drawing in a lot of people who aren't thinking
My theory is that people have this compulsion to prove you that they know something. You just need to tell them "I never seen X", and you'll have people getting out of their way to tell you what will happen and how *smart* they are because they already seen it.
I think, people are excited that a thing that means a lot to them is being watched by minor internet celebrity, person that is smart about stories and who can validate feelings about thing.
