I will admit, me dragging grimdark is a really hypocritical “I got mine so fuck you.” I was the perfect age to really enjoy everything about 90s cinema. The Crow and Se7en were my shit.

The Crow was trying to be the gothiest thing that ever gothed, for sure. Seven was pretty grimdark. The Crow also holds up better for me. It's more cartoonish, so it's much easier to take.

It's a nebulous term to be sure.

The Crow is practically TWILIGHT now (which is how it'd be recieved now), and Se7en is way too profoundly on Freeman's side vs Pitt's to be specifically grimdark.

“Grimdark” feels like one of those terms that is entirely a subjective putdown. “Dark and serious, but in my opinion too much so.”

I feel like grimdark requires a genre that is usually lighter. Is grimdark noir even possible?
