Not because you're trying to wow the audience or "grab their attention," but because they're so important in terms of what you communicate to the audience in terms of setting up the rest of the film. CM (and a lot of other marvel movies) understands implicitly that...

they need to give audience the certain information. But they've never have any idea how to really dramatize it, and create compelling immediate motivations, nor get into the real psychology of a character (something phase one movies were actually quite good at).

They just sort of present parameters that are simply meant to be filled in. I'd be more specific, but I don't want to spoil. But once one thing happens in this film it's like the movie finally "starts."

But it could be so easily avoided if they just understood how to start from the start. -all hail goose

I love how she uses the map as part of her acting in that scene with the motorist. Small gestures work so well.

I don’t understand the “stiff” or “wooden” takes on Larson. Like yeah, that’s the point of the story. She’s a brainwashed soldier taken by a militant society. Whenever Larson spoke I found her absolutely charming. Definitely not a miscast situation.

Larson's incredible. But one of the worst things to saddle a character with is "i don't know my past," because you remove all motivation and psychology and make it all seem like affectation until past clicks into place. I think that's what is irking people.

I'm having a lukewarm reaction to it, and haven't worked out yet why I can get its perspective quite literally, but it didn't wow me emotionally.

I definitely found there was a point at which I became wholly invested in Carol, and yes I agree her and Maria were all but Text and honestly they should have taken the risk and done it. They have enough money, they can take a little risk!

The thing is, two women in the Air Force in 1989 would have been extremely careful. So to assume anything beyond friends is 2019 thinking.
