I've been cooking seriously for decades and I'm just NOW learning that in the UK, French Toast is called EGGY BREAD.

Plus French Toast sounds so much better than eggy bread.

I believe you mean "sounds so much more poncy"

I still don’t understand why Americans don’t just call them by their French name then rather Americanising and adding a nationality? And why does it only apply to some recipes and not others?
-
I can think of lots of recipes in Britain that reference a specific place: Dijon mustard, Neapolitan pizza, Hamburger. But the only recipe I can think of with a nationality is Greek yoghurt which I’m pretty sure is about how it’s made not just that it’s imported from Greece.

That’s all well and good for you yankees. But we call ‘em french fries too, which is silly because they’re clearly American.

Speak for yourself! They’re chips to me.

On the subject, I'd strongly recommend The Language of Food - A Linguist Reads the Menu (Dan Jurafsky)!
