We really need to have a long talk about “make white people feel better about racism” movies.
as fantastic as Black Panther is, i feel that it’s problem is it’s one of those movies. BP should be a post-colonialist superhero, but Marvel was too afraid to make Klaw the late stage capitalist/neo-colonialist supervillain that he is and made BP a black on black action movie.
I genuinely think the movie absolutely codefies him as that. Right down to the way he even usurps black culture. Part of what I think makes the movie remarkable is it's not just framing one conversation, but many.
they tried to, but by not making him the main antagonist they brushed it off quickly and it’s still a disservice to the character and BP as a whole. not to mention it’s pretty transparent that the purpose of Everett Ross is to be the noble white man to show “notallwhitemen”
I really think that's a reductive reading of what Coogler was trying to say with T'challa's villainhood, and also wouldn't characterize Ross as "noble." He relative goodness comes from the fact spends the movie largely taking a backseat and learning from everyone around him.
As far as that message goes, I wrote about it a lot:https://filmcrithulk.blog/2018/02/17/black-panthers-right-thing/ …
I was about to go in but you pretty much covered it. Haha
Always go in! And yeah, what's so amazing about that movie is how it feels like it's framing so many amazing conversations at once. T'Challa's point about a traumatized culture is heart-rendering, at the same time it never pulls a punch with his codified sexism.
It's also one of the few movies that has it's hero learn some tough lessons, while also confirming the heart of his deep beliefs. There's SO MUCH to this movie. Gahhhh it's so good, haha.
My main issue, and this sounds weird, is that the movie doesn't give enough of an argument why the violent overthrow of global government is a bad thing.
Which government? And inciting war on a global scale isn’t a good enough reason?
