If there was any popular storytelling notion that I could blow up, it would be the belief that funny things can't be serious and serious things can't be funny.

And adults often are much more comfortable letting that stuff back in. Or at least they should be. Because there's still a lot of that in "intellectual" dramas where they want to be seen as brilliant / adult / genius and SERIOUS filmmakers.

But it's the same juvenile instinct, just with fancier armor.

Apparently some think this thread is an attempt to justify only consuming childish things. Good granola is it not and I hope that's obvious. But trying to respond to that critique with a declaration like..

"This list of serious adult dark existentially terrifying films are my favorites of the year!" only helps reinforce the false notion and back up the notion that the other movies ARE childish or somehow lesser, and ultimately just proves my point so *insert shrug ascii*

Tie that into insecurity in one’s masculinity and you got a recipe for your everyday toxicity in the mentions/comment section.

Nah, brah. I like both dark and serious as well as light and fun. And I like them separate, not mixed. Nothing to do with “being adult”, lmao. It’s actually the “it can be both” crowd that reeks of self-consciousness. That mentality usually fuels parodies/meta works.

I agree 100 percent, bro. Humor is a vital part of humanity. To many, humor is how they cope. To leave humor out is to deny your story a whole spectrum of emotions. I find that the more a story tries to convince you it's deep and mature, the more insecure it's efforts feel.

It is for this reason that devil may cry 3 has my favorite story in fiction. There's a LOT of depth to it's story and characters, but the game lets the characters have fun and go wild The fun scenes actually strengthen the impact of the dramatic scenes. The contrast helps alot

More should replace the Bible’s version of the “childish things” bit w/ the CS Lewis riff on it: “When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”
