No classes necessary. Watch JAWS. Think: what is this shot supposed to make me feel, where is it directing my, why? And write it all down as you go.https://twitter.com/switchingtime/status/1078397768014561280 …

Are there any master classes of sorts you'd recommend for learning more about the emotional nuances of cinematography in terms of technical application?

"Write it all down as you go" is great advice, rarely given.

Yep. Raiders is another great one for this. Spielberg's stuff in particular is just so clear and beautifully designed; you can really see his thinking onscreen.

Every frame a painting on you tube is a great place to start. Masterful breakdowns on films and directing.

I recently went to a film-making workshop for vets, and we spent a big chunk of time just unpacking just this single scene. It was really educational.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2Ecwm7Alrc …

YES!! This was my film education in college: writing a paper on Spielberg using Jaws, Raiders, ET, Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List (what was out at the time.) I think I also included Duel which I’ve always appreciated. Jaws STILL commands attention every time it’s on.

I've been taking a Japanese film class this semester and, having been a student of international relations, this has been hard for me to grasp as I don't really have the kind of lexicon for film study and critique. This advice would have been awesome at the start.

There is some advice like this to aspiring novelists? Like, how to master techniques on language?

I would LOVE to know about novel critics who dive as deep into this stuff as Hulk does with cinema.
