What’s funny to me is I think 80% of this feeling could be fixed by turning those ending fades into hard cuts and getting rid of the “pull put zoom to map” which signifies the end of the movie. Its all in the transitions, folks. Always.https://twitter.com/mattsinger/status/1075043484476850176 …

It’s been 15 years since THE RETURN OF THE KING opened in theaters, which means it’s been 6 years since the movie actually ended.

It's also 200 minutes, a 3 hour 20 minute film is the length of 2 normal size films.

I've felt this too. The one fade that is absolutely perfect, though, is the fade-to-black of Frodo and Sam on the lava-float on Mount Doom.

Agreed. I was at a preview screening, which went gangbusters. But it was those fades that deked everyone out and drew groans when the next scene would fade in. Everything was going great until then. I've always wondered why that choice was made.

It is on paper / content / meaning. It just needs simple edits to coax along.

jackson has done some amazing stuff, but all those middle-earth films have really bizarre pacing (structure?) where they will gloss over some dramatically important moments and then linger over others, usually using the same formula each time. the end is just part of that.

He fixed that for The Hobbit by simply lingering over every scene

That's an intentional story decision. Because the idea of a 17-year-gap between two scenes is goofy enough on paper, let alone in a movie. Also lol it makes Gandalf sound like a doddering professor who's been working on his thesis for two decades.
