For me, it was imitating Bugs Bunny when I was just a kid. I don't remember specifically which one, but you *know* how flamboyant Bugs got in the old cartoons. I just thought it was funny because, you know, it's freaking Bugs Bunny. My folks, not so much.

Same, but in my case I was five(ish) and scrawled in crayon random numbers on my hands and feet because I was convinced I was going to go out clubbing (and thought that's how it worked). My mom was pissed. Might not have been fear though. Embarrassment, maybe.

I also played with Barbies (my family endlessly shamed me for that), stole makeup sponges from my mother, occasionally put on her heels when she wasn't around, and a million other things. I've moved past fear and embarrassment. It's just shame now.

Did you ever watch Please Like Me? It’s on Hulu now, Australian series. Examines gently (among comedy/romance) the various ways people come out and the various expectations of the people around them. While also just being lovely all round. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/11/26/the-home-cooked-pleasures-of-please-like-me …

Not dancing to that song doesn't mean you're not gay, it means you have no heart

I very much appreciate my dad explicitly telling me that if me or my brother were gay, that's absolutely fine. Neither of us are, but him expressing that means a lot to me to this day.

A lot of people I meet are unsure if I'm gay or not for a while and when they inevitably confide this in me down the road I get vaguely self-conscious about my mannerisms for a little while. I hate it, but gay was an insult for so long in my life that the association is instant.
