I never heard that quote before, context really is everything. The chopped down version sounds cynical, the full version sounds like an educator exposing the value and purpose of education in a realistic way.

That truncated line always bothered me. I hate when writing is portrayed as some mystical, amorphous ‘talent’ that can’t be learned or taught. And Goldman was all about technique, and a deliberate effect on the audience.
