The entire problem is that Twitter (and the internet at large) measures itself by false metrics. Growth is about new accounts, follows, and high degree of tweets and interactivity. Every choice is made to suit those metrics. And likes? Likes are useless to that.

Which is exactly why they started treating them exactly like retweets and putting it in other feeds. Which is also why they put random people you don't follow and encourage people fighting. It drives the metrics. But likes are, of course, integral to user experience.

We love likes. They're a way of showing support without automatically endorsing through your own acct, spamming etc. But since twitter growth is FINALLY slowing to a crawl, they need us to spam so they're going outright ban anything that doesn't fit the false model of growth.

We can blame good ole capitalism or pretend it's just business, etc. but twitter in particular has always been short-sighted and awful and inhumane and toxic and hateful and and and and and and and

Twitter is like any other tool, mindless and blameless. It doesn't create drama and harrassment, it's just a vehicle for that. Hell, every language known to man is used to oppress and abuse people, but they're also capable of tremendous beauty and healing.

NooOOOOOooooope. Switch the word twitter to guns and you'll see the problem. There's a reason we maintain and take care of tools and they have to be made as safe as possible. Communities especially. This ongoing techno-libertarian belief is insanity.

I have the same view of guns, unless you're playing Enter the Gungeon it isn't the guns doing the killing. Sticking with the gun analogy, yeah proper gun stewardship is necessary, but who carries that maintenance out, the manufacturers or end users?

We are so passed the "guns don't kill people" debate by ever single metric of study. They kill people. This is madness. Please, no further discussion on this. We'll talk about other things some other time.

Ok, I will go educate myself on what you are talking about. I believe something was true without doing research, and have been called out on it. I will research further and examine my long-held belief.
