Which is exactly why they started treating them exactly like retweets and putting it in other feeds. Which is also why they put random people you don't follow and encourage people fighting. It drives the metrics. But likes are, of course, integral to user experience.

We love likes. They're a way of showing support without automatically endorsing through your own acct, spamming etc. But since twitter growth is FINALLY slowing to a crawl, they need us to spam so they're going outright ban anything that doesn't fit the false model of growth.

The bigger problem is that people with larger Follower counts can spew lies about anything and have their hurtful words spread faster than any fact-checking from smaller accounts can do damage control...

Yeah, and this is a way to give bad ideas the same exposure as good ones, because obviously people are more likely to reply to a stupid tweet in an attempt to correct it. Total BS.

Never thought about that, makes all sense tho It reminds me of youtube pushing controvrsial videos because it had a lot of comments likes/dislikes. It served no good but it fed the algorithm perfectly

an associated, deeper problem is that there are no “true” metrics - you always have to interpret the data to extract meaning and work out of what you are doing is making what you want to happen, happen. So much of tech's pathologies come from mistaking the metric for the goal.
